European Jews are expressing their shock and concern over the recent pro-Hamas protests that have been taking place throughout Europe. As a rabbi who splits his time between Berlin and Vienna, Lior Bar-Ami knows all too well the dangers that Jewish people face in these cities and other parts of Western Europe. This discomfort has only been heightened by the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war, which has led to an increase in anti-Semitic incidents across the continent. It’s a hard pill to swallow for the Jews who believed that Europe was a modern, multicultural, and accepting place.

Europe’s demographic decline and unchecked immigration have played a significant role in fueling the rise of anti-Semitism. As European nations fail to have enough children to sustain their population, they are relying on immigrants to make up for the shortfall. However, many of these immigrants are not interested in assimilating into European society and instead seek to transform the continent into a caliphate. Moreover, there are even young European supporters of Hamas, whose motivations are difficult to understand.
The situation in Europe is increasingly becoming uncomfortable for Jews, and it’s only a matter of time before it becomes uncomfortable to be European in general. Europeans have already experienced the effects of terrorism targeting both Jews and non-Jews. The question of whether European Judaism has a future in Europe is intertwined with the question of whether Europe itself has a future. The rise of Hamas in the U.S. Congress and the lack of support for Israel from the Biden administration are additional causes for concern.
It is clear that the current tensions will not be resolved peacefully and are likely to erupt into violence in the near future. Just like in 1939, European Jews, and even American Jews, may once again find themselves in the crosshairs. While there is always a chance that the situation may improve, the author of this article fears that it may not.
