It’s a classic case of progressives scrambling for one last chance to rubber-stamp their agenda before the adults take charge.
The far-left group, Demand Justice, is making an intense appeal to Senate Democrats, insisting they “do whatever it takes” in the final weeks of this session to confirm a slew of judges. They are essentially warning that this might be their final opportunity to appoint “fair-minded” judges. What exactly their definition of “fair-minded” might be is anyone’s guess, but chances are it’s not in line with mainstream American values. Meanwhile, they seem to expect Vice President Harris to be some kind of cheerleader, urging Democrats to roll up their sleeves and dive headfirst into a judicial confirmation frenzy.
Currently, five Circuit Court picks and 24 district court nominees are sitting in limbo, awaiting Senate votes. With Republicans poised to take a commanding 53-47 majority come January, it truly is a frantic race against the clock for these progressive activists. One can almost hear the desperation in their voices as they declare that Democrats must not just roll over and accept defeat simply because they lost control of the Senate. This paints a rather dramatic picture of a party unwilling to accept the will of the voters.
Senior adviser to Demand Justice, Skye Perryman, emphasizes the need for “good, qualified, fair-minded judges” to be confirmed. These judges, according to her, are urgently required to protect ordinary people’s rights and uphold the Constitution. What’s being overlooked here is that many Americans have a different vision of what that looks like, particularly after witnessing the havoc wreaked by judicial activism in the past. The push is set to include ads and lobbying efforts, with the organization clearly attempting to rally their troops for what they see as a final stand.
Throughout Biden’s presidency, he has managed to confirm one Supreme Court justice, Ketanji Brown Jackson, and a whopping 210 lower court judges—numbers that would make any leftist giddy. But it’s important to appreciate the context: during Trump’s four-year tenure, he appointed three Supreme Court justices, which notably established a strong conservative majority capable of reversing landmark decisions like Roe v. Wade. As we look to the future, Trump’s potential to appoint even more justices upon returning to office only adds to the urgency for progressives to expedite their agendas now.
As the landscape shifts and the gavel of power prepares to change hands, one can only wonder whether the looming Republican dominance will rein in the lemming rush of far-left judicial candidates. It seems clear that while the Democrats are doing their best to leave their mark, the American people are tuning in and are keenly aware of the consequences.
