Abolishing Income Tax Could Revitalize US Economy and Restore Freedom

Tax Day has arrived, a time for hard-working Americans to pull out their calculators and flash their W-2s, pondering a great American truth: taxes are simply a modern-day form of highway robbery wrapped in a patina of civics. No true patriot enjoys forking over their hard-earned money to fund government programs that resemble a bizarre circus act more than a sensible budget. Drag shows, foreign military escapades, and the never-ending stream of cash to so-called “woke” institutions might seem like spending priorities out of a bad comedy sketch. Yet, the real travesty lies in the very structure of our income tax system.

The Founding Fathers would roll in their graves at the mere sight of today’s progressive income tax. Benjamin Franklin may have mused about the certainty of death and taxes, but Thomas Jefferson, in his wisdom, would likely have declared that a government that burdens its citizens is no government at all. Jefferson’s ideal of a wise government taking only from what is necessary sounds downright nostalgic in a world where taxpayers are bled at increasingly higher rates.

Enter the dreaded progressive tax, a system fundamentally at odds with the principles that birthed this nation. It’s anyone’s guess why policymakers still cling to this ill-fated structure, as it doesn’t help improve revenue—instead, it acts like a lead weight dragging down the economy. The Laffer Curve, conceptualized by economist Arthur Laffer, provides an elegant explanation that seems to elude most legislators. Simply put, it illustrates that raising tax rates can actually lead to lower overall revenue, as citizens become less inclined to work harder when they know the government will snatch a bigger slice of their pie.

Laffer’s idea isn’t new; in fact, it’s been understood for centuries. Medieval economists were blunter about it than modern bureaucrats, making it clear that low tax rates spur economic growth, while high tax rates lead to stagnation. No one is keen on working 100 hours a week just to zero out their paycheck. A tax rate at or near 100% would essentially eliminate any incentive to work at all. Yet, despite this age-old wisdom, Congress seems determined to ignore both history and basic economic principles.

The madness doesn’t stop at the federal level. For those making over $609,350, Uncle Sam dips into those pocketbooks for a hefty 37%. But the irony here is that increased taxes don’t equate to increased revenues. When taxes soar, the motivation to pursue higher paychecks dwindles, which ultimately harms the economy. Problems could be solved without income taxes—think tariffs, which once sustained the country for years before federal income tax became the norm. Nostalgia for simpler times isn’t just for the Sunday dinner table; it resonates with anyone who yearns for an era before income tax loomed ominously over responsible Americans.

What remains astonishing is how policymakers miss the memo about the Laffer Curve’s two effects on tax revenues. The arithmetic effect means that raising rates can initially increase revenue, but the much larger economic effect reveals that these hikes discourage wealth generation, leading to a shrinking tax base. This is the paradox of progressive taxation: as it smothers the productivity of the market, it ultimately starves the very government that relies on it for income.

Absent any awareness or desire to cut taxes, the federal government continues its path of economic destruction like a toddler on a rampage in a candy store. The call for reform is clearer than ever: abolishing the income tax should be a priority, not a subject for polite conversation over dinner. The Laffer Curve is not just a piece of academic jargon; it’s a potential blueprint for flipping our economy back onto a growth trajectory. In an ideal world, the wisdom of dynamic lawmakers would descend from the clouds, and reforms, much like a tax reform package led by visionaries like Donald Trump, would drive the prize of complete federal income tax abolition straight toward the finish line.
