In a bold move, a select House subcommittee has issued a subpoena to Bank of America (BoA) in order to obtain information regarding the bank’s alleged sharing of customers’ financial information with the FBI. This bombshell revelation has ignited concerns about the potential weaponization of the federal government and the infringement of individuals’ privacy rights.
The subpoena was announced by the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, a subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee. The committee’s chairman is none other than Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, known for his no-holds-barred approach. It should come as no surprise that Rep. Jordan is leading the charge to uncover what he calls a “pretty frightening” breach of trust and privacy.

According to a letter written by Rep. Jordan on Thursday, Bank of America willingly handed over a list of individuals who made transactions in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area between January 5 and January 7, 2021, using their BoA credit or debit cards. The FBI received this information without any legal process, raising serious questions about the boundaries of law enforcement agencies’ power and the violation of citizens’ rights.
Bank of America, however, was reluctant to cooperate voluntarily, claiming to have followed a “legal process” in sharing their customers’ sensitive information. This prompted Rep. Jordan and Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky to resort to the issuance of a subpoena. The subpoena requests not only the requested information but also demands that any personal identifying information be redacted to safeguard the privacy of individuals.
As of now, Bank of America has yet to provide a comment or explanation for their actions.
