With Israel under fire from multiple fronts and its citizens desperately battling for their survival, the timing of President Biden and Vice President Harris’s words couldn’t be worse. In what seems to be a masterclass in political tone-deafness, the dynamic duo decided this was the right moment to publicly admonish Israel. As if the Jewish state needed any added pressure at a time when its very existence is at stake.
To the delight of those who don’t have a dog in this fight, Biden insisted that his administration would tread lightly and “reassess” military aid to Israel. One has to wonder if he sought advice from the same advisors who have done a bang-up job with domestic issues like inflation and border security. This approach is akin to throwing a life raft to a sinking ship—only to weigh it down with lead. Sending a message of restraint doesn’t scream solidarity for a nation facing existential threats.

Kamala Harris, presumably searching through her toolbox of empty platitudes, joined the fray, echoing the notion of “careful consideration” when it comes to what assistance Israel can expect. Careful consideration is nice and all, but if one were to survey the chaos brewing around Israel’s borders, it’s clear that time is a luxury they can’t afford. Instead of showing backbone, the administration’s response is more akin to a gentle nudge towards the exit ramp amid the chaos.
While the Biden administration may be convinced that showing a modicum of distance from Israel will boost their approval ratings among progressive base voters, it’s hard to fathom that anyone with common sense believes this will actually help. The horrific realities on the ground suggest that this kind of tepid stance could embolden hostile actors rather than foster peace. It’s a classic case of confusing weakness with wisdom. In simple terms, Biden and Harris appear to be playing checkers in a game of chess, not realizing that their moves could have devastating consequences.
In a world where clarity is often clouded by political agendas, it seems increasingly clear that this administration has lost sight of what true support for allies means. Perhaps sending a heartfelt tweet instead of concrete backing would suffice in their minds. Meanwhile, the brave people of Israel continue to fight their battles, leaving everyone to wonder why their so-called allies are choosing to tie their hands instead of extending a helping hand.
