It was disclosed that Chinese officials accessed private messages and phone conversations of Americans, including those of high-profile individuals. This alarming development raises serious questions about whether the Biden administration has unwittingly left Americans vulnerable to Chinese cyber threats.
One cannot help but think that with all the technology at our disposal, we should be able to put a virtual lock on those sensitive conversations. However it appears that basic cybersecurity protocols have been ignored, particularly by some telecommunications companies. National Security advisors are openly lamenting this failure. Instead of playing a game of catch-up, the United States should be in defense mode, preempting such attacks before they even happen. Yet here we are, grappling with the aftermath and trying to piece together what information has been taken.
Many voices in Washington are calling for a stronger response to these actions, and among them is Congressman Michael Waltz, who passionately believes that the U.S. needs to shift into offense mode. The congressman suggests that instead of simply reacting to China’s technology theft and spying activities, the U.S. should impose real consequences for these actions.
