In 1897, Mark Twain took it upon himself to squash rumors of his own death, responding to the idle gossip swirling through London with a characteristic lack of drama. Fast forward to the present day, and today’s Democrats are echoing that very sentiment, though they might be best served by adding a few qualifiers concerning their own political vitality.
Twain is often quoted as saying that politicians and diapers need frequent changing, though Twain scholars can’t quite confirm he coined that gem. Whatever the source, it’s a sentiment that would do wonders to describe the current state of the Democratic Party. They’ve become an embodiment of the old adage, desperately needing a shake-up after suffering what can only be described as a political funeral at the hands of Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
Donald Trump just posted this on Truth Social.

The summer debate in Atlanta was essentially a horror show for Democrats, with Joe Biden resembling something out of a zombie movie. His ashen face, blank stares, and incoherent mumblings painted a vivid picture of a leader desperately clinging to life while showing signs of serious cognitive decline. Those who have been paying close attention for the last three and a half years were not shocked. The real question has always been: who is actually calling the shots in this administration?
Despite the obvious, the media, his colleagues, and even his family have worked overtime to deny Biden’s mental state, driven by one singular motivation—power. To admit the truth about Biden’s visible struggles would mean their grip on authority would loosen, and well, that’s simply not an option for those determined to keep the reins of control.
Biden’s woeful performance only served to introduce the next supposed “savior” of the Democratic Party, Kamala Harris, an elevation that felt more like a last-ditch effort to salvage a sinking ship than an actual leadership move. The desperation is palpable as they attempt to cling to power, all while masking Harris’ questionable qualifications and abilities.
As the Democratic establishment stumbles through the aftermath of their electoral defeat, they appear aimless and confused, much like a headless chicken running around a barnyard. The Democratic Party finds itself in a quandary too deep to ignore, unwilling to face the hard truth about their losses. Instead of reflection, they continue to walk the vicious circle of denial, sipping the poisoned Kool-Aid of their own making, all while hoping their self-imposed demise will somehow spare them blame in the grand narrative against Trump.
While it may be a tad premature to declare the Democratic Party as a whole dead, they are undeniably on life support. A revival would necessitate a complete overhaul of their approach—embracing honesty, accountability, and perhaps a dose of humility. But, given the current psychological state of the party, many Democrats would rather choose oblivion than confront the stark realities facing them.
Should they survive past November 2024, they will need to dissect the undeniable truth: a billionaire stripped away their once ironclad hold on the American middle class. The need to address their party’s elitist tendencies and disastrous stances on immigration, economic policy, and progressive social issues is paramount if they ever hope to rise from the ashes. If the Democrats choose to ignore these lessons from a Republican realignment, it’s not just the party that might be finished—it could be the end of their political relevance as they know it.
