Ex-Army Majors Slam VP Pick Tim Walz Over Iraq Deployment Exit

In a twist that seems straight out of a political drama, the retired Command Sergeant Major Doug Julin has surfaced with a very inconvenient truth about Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. As the story goes, shortly before Walz’s National Guard unit was set to head to Iraq, he opted for the golden parachute of retirement. News of this tantalizing development has gained fresh attention since Vice President Kamala Harris has picked Walz as her running mate for 2024, putting the spotlight back on this prescient moment from 2005.

Retired Army Command Sergeant Major Thomas Behrends, who happens to have Walz as a subordinate in those hazy pre-deployment days, has been vocal about his belief that Walz should have held the line rather than bail out the moment things got serious. A leaked Facebook post from Behrends claims Walz’s sudden retirement reeks of someone trying to duck out of responsibilities—a not-so-great look for someone who’s vying to become the vice president of the United States.

Including a few sarcastic jabs, Julin reiterated that had he been in command, Walz would have received some straightforward advice: toughen up and get ready to face the music. It appears that Walz, fully aware of what was about to unfold with his unit, made a strategic retreat. In the words of one fellow soldier, this decision left many of them scratching their heads and wondering what secrets Walz had that they didn’t. The message? When the going gets tough, always check your parachute.

The retired sergeant majors aren’t pulling any punches; they’re openly declaring Walz a failure on multiple fronts. From dropping out of the Sergeants Major Academy to cutting his enlistment short, the list of his infractions reads like a “how not to” guide for military service. According to Behrends and others, Walz didn’t just dodge a bullet; he dodged a career-defining moment when his country called on him. This sort of behavior isn’t what leads armies or nations; it’s what leads to questions of character.

None of this would matter much if Walz were just another nobody, but as he prepares to potentially take the second highest office in the land alongside Harris, it’s worth contemplating if this “backdoor deal” will really resonate with voters. A leader who seemingly flinches when the chips are down might just be a tough sell in a country that, at least outside the major cities, still appreciates the values of honor and sacrifice. As Walz gears up for the campaign trail in support of the Harris-Walz ticket, the echoes of his past decisions may well trail behind him more prominently than he or his advisors would prefer.
