Haggerty Challenges Biden as Mexico Seizes Key US Port

Senator Bill Haggerty of Tennessee is ready to throw down the gauntlet against what can only be described as President Biden’s latest gift-wrapped offering to Mexico. In a stunning display of negligence, the Biden administration seems poised to abandon Vulcan Materials Co., the largest producer of gravel and sand in the United States, as Mexico, the country that isn’t exactly known for its generosity, swoops in like a vulture. The Mexican government seized Vulcan’s deepwater port in 2022 under the convenient pretext of conservation. This is just the latest episode in a long saga where American interests are tossed aside in favor of foreign whims.

Over three decades, Vulcan Materials had operated in Mexico without incident, but apparently, that didn’t matter to the Mexican government. Now, thanks to a climate of weak leadership, it looks like this essential property could slip through the cracks just as the Biden administration is restructuring trade agreements with our southern neighbor. The worry is that if the U.S. is not careful, Mexico could nab this property for free, declaring it a nature reserve all along the way. Nothing says environmental responsibility like expropriating American property, right?

Haggerty has made it clear that he won’t be sitting idly by while America’s industrial backbone is handed over to another country. His assertion that Mexico has essentially pulled off a heist of U.S. resources sounds alarmingly accurate. It’s as though the Biden administration is desperately trying to befriend foreign governments at the expense of American businesses, handing over strategic assets like a kid giving away Halloween candy. Haggerty aptly questions how any rational administration would let this happen, suggesting that the port, if turned over, could easily end up in the hands of a foreign competitor—like China, which is just waiting to invest in strategic infrastructure through its infamous Belt and Road initiative.

In stark contrast to the apparent inaction from the White House, Haggerty is ramping up efforts to prevent this disaster. Last year, he introduced the Defending American Property Abroad Act, designed to keep other nations from pulling moves like Mexico did. Clearly, Haggerty intends to make Biden’s reluctance to act a topic of conversation rather than letting it slide into the news cycle unnoticed. Americans deserve to know that their government is allowing other countries to rob them—if they don’t rouse themselves to protect American interests now, when will they?

With 920 million tons of sand and gravel produced in the U.S. in 2023, it’s hard to comprehend why protecting strategic assets isn’t a top policy priority for this administration. Instead, it seems that Biden is content to play bureaucratic chess while American companies face existential threats from foreign powers. One can only hope that Senator Haggerty succeeds in avoiding what could be a monumental blunder for our national interests—if not for the economy, then at least for the principle of defending American property against avaricious foreign powers.
