Harris Neck-and-Neck with Trump as Democrats Question Their Choices

Vice President Kamala Harris is finding herself in a precarious position, polling nearly neck-and-neck with former President Donald Trump, as revealed by a recent New York Times/Siena College survey. This comes hot on the heels of President Biden’s decision to suspend his campaign, which has left some Democrats holding their breath and others wondering what exactly they were thinking in the first place. With Trump clocking in at 48% and Harris trailing ever so slightly at 47%, both candidates are hanging on by a thread, begging the question: is this really the best the Democrats can offer?

The polling data indicates a slight improvement for Trump compared to earlier months, where Biden was losing ground like a sinking ship. After a disastrous debate performance in June, Biden found himself trailing Trump by a staggering six points. As the elder statesman of the Democratic Party bowed out, Harris managed to rally the troops. She’s managed to secure a hefty number of delegates, boasting 3,284, thus clearly showing that some Democrats are more interested in following a younger candidate than a geriatric with no clear vision.

Harris’s camp seems to believe they’ve struck gold with momentum since Biden dropped out, claiming that a whopping 70% of surveyed individuals want her to lead the ticket. It’s hard not to chuckle at the idea that after years of maneuvering, the Democrats think they’ve finally got a winning candidate, even if the polling isn’t too far off from a dead heat. Meanwhile, 14% of the surveyed crowd still wish for an alternative to the Harris brand of ‘leadership.’ It’s apparent that life as Biden’s understudy has not prepared her for the main act.

Despite being nearly two decades younger than Trump, the Vice President’s age might not be enough to mask the alarming support numbers. The survey suggests that while her overall favorability has risen from 36% to 46%, she still lags behind Trump, who stands firmly at 48%. Furthermore, a staggering 50% of those surveyed described the current economic situation as ‘poor.’ These are the kinds of numbers that would cause even the most stubborn of Democrats to consult their crystal balls before getting overly optimistic about a potential Harris candidacy.

With only about 103 days until Election Day, the clock is ticking, and voters remain acutely aware of economic conditions that likely won’t be magically resolved by the time the polls open. As for the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Chicago, it seems Harris is set for a coronation without much competition, but it’s far from a royal guarantee. The path ahead remains muddled at best, with the potential re-emergence of Trump looming ominously overhead—a scenario that will push many undecided voters straight into the GOP’s welcoming arms. As they say, the chickens may be coming home to roost, but for Harris, it’s just a matter of whether they’ll come before or after the election.
