House Censures Rep Al Green for Disruptive Antics During Trump’s Address

The House of Representatives is officially giving Democrat Rep. Al Green of Texas a serious wake-up call after his antics during President Donald Trump’s address before a joint session, and let’s just say, he’s getting a big “time-out” from the grown-ups. In a nail-biter of a vote, 211 to 209, the House decided to censure Green for his childish disruption during what should have been a moment of serious legislative discourse. Apparently, the “order” part of “orderly conduct” is not in Green’s vocabulary.

During Trump’s speech, as the president was delivering his remarks, Green decided it would be a good idea to throw decorum out the window. House Speaker Mike Johnson stepped up to the plate and admonished the Democrats to keep their behavior in check, sounding more like a school principal addressing a rowdy class than a congressional leader. Despite repeated warnings, it appeared the Democrats took more joy in their raucous behavior than in respecting the dignity of the House—who knew they were all auditioning for a role in a political circus?

When all attempts at civility were met with resistance, Johnson didn’t mince words. He commanded that the Sergeant at Arms restore order, which led to Green being escorted out of the chamber. It was a scene that could only be described as dramatic, but perhaps not quite as dramatic as the Democrats’ juvenile attempts to disrupt events that most Americans consider important.

In response, Rep. Dan Newhouse of Washington wasted no time in writing up a resolution to censure Green for his unacceptable conduct. The resolution laid out the facts: Green’s conduct was so disruptive that it warranted a walk of shame courtesy of the Sergeant-at-Arms. One could expect a little more maturity from someone representing Texas, but apparently Green missed that memo in his political training.

The Democrats, in classic form, tried to table the censure resolution, which is essentially just a fancy way of saying they wanted to sweep it under the rug. Unsurprisingly, that move was shot down faster than a duck in hunting season. In the end, the House made it clear that unruly behavior would not be tolerated and that there are consequences to acting out—something any parent would understand but seems to elude many in Congress. It’s safe to say this incident provided ample material for humor, and a stern lesson to those who might think it’s acceptable to behave like a spoiled child in the halls of power.
