Michigan Abortion Surge Raises Concerns Amid New Amendment

Abortion numbers in Michigan have soared to an astonishing high in 2023, following the passage of a constitutional amendment that secured abortion access in the state the previous year. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported that around 31,241 abortions were performed, marking an increase of over 1,000 from 2022. This surge has propelled the state to abortion levels not seen in over three decades, a trend reflecting the radical shift in policies post-Roe v. Wade’s overturn.

The constitutional amendment, which grants a so-called “fundamental right” to abortion access, was championed by activists clamoring for reproductive “freedom.” This amendment passed by a resounding margin, ensuring that abortion remains accessible for up to 24 weeks and even beyond, provided the mother’s physical or mental health is in peril. It essentially breathes life into a long-extinct pre-Roe ban dating back to 1931 that would typically apply after the high-profile Supreme Court ruling last year.

Since 2010, the number of abortions in Michigan has been on a steady incline, but the 2023 figures demonstrate just how far the state has veered into the realm of the absurd. Among these numbers, young women under 20 accounted for over 8% of abortions, while the 20-24 age group represented about 26%. One has to wonder if these figures reflect empowerment or just a troubling trend of irresponsibility, encouraging such life-altering decisions at a young age.

Complications from abortions saw a puzzling spike as well. With 16 reported complications in 2023 alone—up from a mere 15 in the previous three years combined—one has to question the safety of this supposed “healthcare” that activists fervently champion. The complication rate, which was previously at 1.7 per 10,000 procedures, jumped to 5.1 per 10,000 in 2023. This raises significant red flags for anyone who’s been sold the idea that more access equals safer options for women.

While abortion remains a hot-button issue ahead of elections, it’s telling that only three states—Florida, Nebraska, and South Dakota—voted against adding a right to abortion into their laws. One can only imagine what future generations will think when they look back at these decisions. As the controversy over abortion continues to escalate, Michigan stands as an unfortunate poster child for liberal policies run amok, with more than a few eyebrows raised about the direction the state is heading.
