NBC Host Skips Critical Amendment Clause in Trump Interview

NBC’s “Meet the Press” host, Kristen Welker, seems to have flubbed her constitutional commitment in a recent interview with President-elect Donald Trump. She threw a question his way about his plans to end birthright citizenship through an executive order but conveniently left out a critical part of the Fourteenth Amendment. Apparently, the words “subject to the jurisdiction thereof” weren’t on her teleprompter when it came time to grill the former president.

During the interview, Welker wasted no time asking if Trump would stick with his promise to put an end to birthright citizenship on his first day in office. Trump affirmed his intention, and one could almost hear the collective eye rolls from conservatives widely aware of the amendment’s text. The Fourteenth Amendment’s language states that citizenship extends only to those “subject to the jurisdiction” of the U.S., but that little gem was left out as Welker attempted to push her narrative.

This missing clause is not just a neat party trick; it’s the crux of the matter and suggests a serious misunderstanding—or misrepresentation—of what the amendment is all about. When it comes to the grant of automatic citizenship to children of illegal immigrants, mainstream interpretation has often overlooked this essential phrase. Trump highlighted this gap when he pointed out that the framers of the amendment didn’t intend for it to apply to every individual born here, especially those whose actions occur outside the realm of U.S. law.

GOP Senator Mike Lee of Utah jumped into the fray, pointing out that omitting such key words serves no one but those looking to skew the narrative. Lee emphasized that Congress holds the power to clarify who qualifies as “born in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof.” Yet, Welker’s selective editing threatens to mislead viewers, painting Trump’s plan to rectify these concerns as an extremist overreach rather than a constitutional response.

In what amounts to a classic case of media dishonesty, Welker’s failure to mention the omitted phrase reeks of an agenda to portray Trump as someone who disregards the law. Leftist media outlets have historically leaned into narratives that suggest the former president operates outside the law, and this latest interview is another swing-and-a-miss in their efforts. If the mainstream media wants to regain even a hint of credibility, it might want to consult a dictionary or, perhaps, the actual Constitution next time before lobbing softballs at an ex-president.

In the end, it seems the battle over birthright citizenship is not just about policy but about interpretation—of the law and the media’s role in it. Keep pushing those agendas, folks, but remember this: truth has a way of surfacing, no matter how well it’s buried.
