Noem Defends Trump’s Plan to Send Illegal Aliens to Guantanamo Bay

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem recently took to the couch of CNN’s “State of the Union” to defend President Trump’s audacious plan to send certain illegal aliens to that lovely government estate located at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. When asked about the legality of using the facility for this purpose, Noem assertively made it clear that the Trump administration is ready to back this controversial move, even if critics come out in droves to protest.

It turns out that Guantanamo Bay has a storied history, having played host to various individuals who have dared to breach America’s borders. Noem pointed out that this isn’t exactly uncharted territory – migrants have been sent to the base in the past. It seems that the administration feels quite at home with the idea of shipping borders-jumpers off to sunny Cuba, sparking implications that previous administrations may not have had the backbone to consider such options.

In a classic back-and-forth, host Dana Bash expressed concern about whether it’s even legal to ship these illegal aliens to Guantanamo once they’ve already set foot in the United States. Noem appeared unfazed by the question, confidently assuring us that President Trump is all-in on this plan. She brought up the legal scholars who supposedly back this action – because what’s a few questionable legal maneuvers without a couple of suits on staff to green-light them?

Naturally, Bash relayed the striking reality that some of these individuals may find themselves “indefinitely” housed at Guantanamo until the administration can coax their home countries into accepting them back. Noem cleverly redirected the blame to the Biden administration’s inability to negotiate with those pesky countries, namely Venezuela, who refuse to take their own citizens back.

The entire exchange serves as a reminder of the ongoing border crisis and the different approaches taken by each administration. While Democrats often showcase a penchant for leniency, Noem and her team stand firmly behind the idea that unresolved immigration issues require some serious measures, like making use of everyone’s favorite detention center. One must wonder whether Guantanamo Bay could become the latest trendy vacation spot for migrants, as long as no one reads the fine print.
