Taxpayers Fund Multi-Million Dollar Study on Puberty Blockers for Kids

The latest segment of Townhall’s riveting investigation pulls back the curtain on just how deeply steeped in taxpayer money the LGBTQ indoctrination agenda is, particularly when it comes to children. In this piece, the spotlight shines brightly on a federally-funded initiative that’s actively seeking to recruit “transgender” children for a study focused on the supposed mental health benefits of puberty blockers. Yes, you read that right—some institutions seem hell-bent on proving that pumping kids full of hormones before they hit puberty is not only acceptable but a saving grace for their mental health.

Three major hospitals, namely Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Ohio, Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, and Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., find themselves at the center of this rather alarming experiment, all funded generously by the National Institute of Mental Health since 2021. The fiscal nibbling totals over $3 million, with an eye-watering renewal lined up for the next fiscal year. One wonders if these institutions are using this funding to explore childhood cancer treatments or pandemic responses, but it seems identifying “gender” in the tender years of eight to twelve trumps all else.

The intricacies of the research are staggering. Out of 132 children being analyzed, half will be prescribed puberty blockers, while the rest act as mere control subjects—essentially lab rats in a politically charged experiment. Officially dubbed the “Trans Development Study,” it boldly targets kids at the very cusp of adolescence. Where once the focus was on developing social skills or playing sports, now it appears that discussing their “gender identity” is paramount, thanks in no small part to organizations like the Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League (SMYAL). This non-profit has taken it upon themselves to recruit participants.

Taxpayer money and parental trust—what could possibly go wrong?
The efforts of SMYAL’s program manager, who identifies as “non-binary,” epitomize this agenda. They even seem to think it’s perfectly normal to convince children as young as six that they might be “transgender.” Invitations to participate in this study are sent out with all the charm of a local carnival ride operator. The call to action even leans on the notion of brain scans being “cool”—because what’s not to love about having a picture of your brain taken while the weight of such a decision hangs heavy in the air?

No need to zigzag around the motives here; the partnership between SMYAL and the children’s hospitals clearly aims more for activism than genuine science. The whole project is less about neutrality and more about pushing a narrative that isn’t backed by solid evidence. And while officials have the gall to claim they’re conducting this research purely for academic purposes, there’s no overlooking the ideological slant that implies these drugs must be beneficial because that aligns with the overarching narrative the left is trying to sell. Previous studies spearheaded by the involved researchers hint at a pre-determined narrative, teetering on the edge of confirmation bias while moonwalking their way through the tragic outcomes associated with past projects.

Even if they manage to produce any semblance of tangible data, the crux of the matter will be whether society really wants to treat children as experimental subjects for trendy political perspectives. Eventually, the complexity of childhood development and individual identity will collide with the one-size-fits-all answer being handed down from on high by the architecture of modern liberal ideologies. Shouldn’t kids be allowed to grow up without the added pressures of adult decisions about their bodies? But why stick to simplicity when a millionaire-funded study can act as a shiny new credential for a dubious agenda?

In matters like these, the balance tips precariously towards what is fashionable over what is beneficial. The glaring spotlight now leaves the opportunity to question the long-term repercussions of such studies, which, although painted as progressive and groundbreaking, might just be paving the way for an avalanche of regret that society will have to confront down the line. With so many questions left unanswered, the stakes couldn’t be higher, and the outcomes could define a generation—whether they’re ready for it or not.
