President Trump took a bold step on Monday by signing an executive order to yank the United States out of the World Health Organization, a move that’s sure to ruffle feathers among the globalist crowd. It seems that every time the former president finds himself in a room with a pen and paper, the status quo becomes a little bit less stable. Standing in the Oval Office, Trump pointed out the absurdity of how much cash America pumps into the organization while, for example, China—despite having a few more billion people—contributes far less. Logic and fairness dictate that if you’re pouring your resources into something, you’d want a fair shake in return, right?
For the record, Trump has had his sights set on the WHO since 2020, when he first threatened to cut ties due to what he deemed the organization’s abysmal handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, which conveniently hatched out of Wuhan. The so-called “experts” at WHO seemed to be waving the green flag for a health crisis, and one doesn’t need a Ph.D. to figure out that’s not a solid foundation for a global health organization. Of course, President Biden managed to reverse Trump’s decision and rejoin the organization, but it appears the current political landscape in Washington isn’t enough to deter Trump from continuing his fight against inept international bureaucracies.

In the executive order, Trump didn’t hold back on the reasons for this latest exit. He cited the WHO’s repeated failures not just during a pandemic, but throughout multiple global health issues and lamented its ongoing struggle with political influence from member states. This is the sort of political theater that makes one question whether the WHO is focused on health or simply playing a game of international chess where the pieces are people’s lives.
Moreover, the order specifically highlighted the fact that American taxpayers have been saddled with exorbitant financial demands that are entirely disproportionate to what other countries contribute. It’s no secret that the U.S. has been the largest donor to the WHO, and isn’t it amusing how these global organizations often call for more money from the biggest player while keeping their own house in disarray? It’s a classic case of “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours” gone awry in a misguided attempt to appear altruistic.
Since its inception in 1948, the WHO has prided itself on being the go-to for global health concerns, but Trump’s recent actions suggest that perhaps they’ve lost that high ground. Instead of being an asset, they’ve become more of a burden. As the tides of leadership shift, it’s clear there’s a growing appetite for prioritizing American interests above the muddled priorities of foreign organizations. At some point, it will be interesting to see whether others follow Trump’s lead or whether the WHO can pull itself out of the quagmire of political gamesmanship.
