Donald Trump is once again winning the battle of wit and word in Congress, leaving Democrats like Jamie Raskin floundering in the aftermath. Lately, Trump has balanced the scales of political banter with his trademark humor, and what do the Democrats do? They clutch their pearls and pretend to be scandalized while completely ignoring their own members’ missteps. It’s just another day in the wild, wacky world of liberal outrage.
During an appearance on MSNBC’s “Velshi,” Raskin took offense to Trump’s use of the moniker “Pocahontas” for Elizabeth Warren in a recent congressional address. Trump, ever the sharp-tongued commentator, called out the substantial amount of money the U.S. has been funnelling toward Ukraine’s defense. When questioned if we should continue for another five years, Warren, in her heavy-handed enthusiasm, gave a resounding “yes.” Trump’s jab in response was classic—pointing out Warren’s past claims of Cherokee heritage that were scientifically debunked as she unsuccessfully tried to ride a wave of faux identity politics. According to the Democrats, calling someone out for their cultural appropriation is far more offensive than an actual disruption of a congressional session.
The party has a knack for selective outrage, as evidenced by the incident involving Rep. Al Green. After a ludicrous outburst about Medicaid that led to his removal from the chamber, Raskin, with a straight face, stood up to defend Green’s antics, claiming they held “strong validity.” But when it came to Trump’s comedic nicknames, suddenly the integrity of Congress was at stake. Raskin’s logic would suggest that Trump should be censured, not Green, for supposedly insulting decorum, despite Trump’s humor being a constant in the unpredictable realm of politics.
Raskin’s claim that Trump wouldn’t know how to handle distractions because he lacks “verbal dexterity” is laughably ironic. One must consider that, for four years, the Left has pushed the narrative that Joe Biden is some sort of eloquent sage, even while he frequently stumbles through speeches and delivers nonsensical statements. This disconnect demonstrates the depths of Democratic hypocrisy, where communication skills are only a problem when it suits their narrative.
What should be clear to anyone paying attention is that this entire melodrama is a rather transparent attempt by Democrats to divert attention from their total inability to address real issues. Instead of focusing on the concerns of everyday Americans, Raskin and his ilk are far more concerned with what Trump calls Elizabeth Warren. One has to wonder how much more productive Congress could become if it devoted even half of its energy toward serious legislation rather than getting bogged down in personal squabbles about nicknames.
The mainstream media continues to play their part in this charade by largely ignoring the glaring fissures in the Democrat narrative. They’ll howl about Trump’s words while conveniently brushing aside their side’s far more egregious breaches of decorum. Clearly, if the Left spent as much time tackling legitimate problems as they do pointlessly debating Trump’s clever monikers, it might just yield some positive results for the nation at large.
