New York City’s Mayor Eric Adams (D) has recently made headlines for his controversial decision to spend a whopping $53 million on prepaid debit cards for border crossers and illegal aliens. This decision comes at a time when a shocking study has revealed that a majority of New Yorkers are struggling to make ends meet, with many living near the poverty line.

Rather than addressing the needs of hardworking New Yorkers, Adams has chosen to funnel millions of taxpayer dollars into a no-bid contract with Mobility Capital Finance. This contract will provide 500 foreign families, who have crossed the United States-Mexico border, with prepaid debit cards, allowing them to live rent-free in hotels while receiving a daily allowance of about $35 per person, adding up to approximately $1,000 per month.
To add insult to injury, the city plans to continuously refill these debit cards with more taxpayer-funded money each month. This lavish spending on border crossers and illegal aliens comes at a time when many native New Yorkers are struggling to afford the basics.
The decision to provide financial assistance to non-citizens has sparked outrage among conservative circles, as many worry that it will only incentivize more border crossers and illegal aliens to flock to New York City in search of similar benefits.
Adding insult to injury, a recent study from Columbia University and Robin Hood has shed light on the dire economic situation in New York City. Shockingly, the study revealed that about one-in-four children in the city are living in poverty, and a staggering 56 percent of New Yorkers are teetering on the edge of poverty.
The study also highlighted a sharp increase in the number of New Yorkers living in poverty, with an additional 500,000 individuals slipping below the poverty line in just one year. This is the largest increase in poverty that has been recorded in the last 12 years.
While Mayor Adams continues to prioritize the needs of non-citizens, the economic outlook for native New Yorkers is growing increasingly bleak. The study uncovered alarming statistics, such as the fact that a family of four in New York City needs an annual income of $88,000 just to break even. Additionally, the median rent in the city has soared to over $2,200 per month, posing a significant financial burden on many families.
Adams’ decision to allocate millions of taxpayer dollars to support border crossers and illegal aliens while neglecting the needs of struggling New Yorkers has sparked widespread criticism and raised serious concerns about the city’s economic priorities. The divide between the treatment of non-citizens and the struggles of native New Yorkers has become increasingly pronounced, leaving many to question the mayor’s commitment to serving the best interests of the city’s residents.
