Florida State University was rocked by tragedy on April 17, 2025, when a 20-year-old student, Phoenix Ikner, opened fire near the bustling student union, killing two men and injuring six others. The shooting, which began just before noon, sent shockwaves through the Tallahassee community and forced the campus into immediate lockdown. Students and staff were ordered to shelter in place as law enforcement swarmed the area, working quickly to secure the campus and neutralize the threat.
Ikner, the son of a longtime Leon County sheriff’s deputy, used his stepmother’s former service weapon—a handgun now owned by her during the attack. He was also armed with a shotgun. Authorities say Ikner acted alone, and he was apprehended after being shot by police for refusing to comply with commands. The suspect and the injured victims were transported to Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, where all are reported to be in stable condition. The two deceased victims were not affiliated with the university.
The campus response was swift and decisive. Within minutes of the first gunshots, FSU’s emergency protocols were activated, and alerts were sent out instructing students to seek shelter and avoid doors and windows. Law enforcement from multiple agencies, including the FBI and U.S. Marshals, coordinated to clear buildings and secure the crime scene.
