A scandal erupted when an aide to the Democratic co-chair of the House Jan. 6 committee, Jacqueline Marsaw, decided not just to put her foot in her mouth but to wade in it up to her knees. Marsaw took to Facebook to express her outrage at the failed assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, going as far as to chastise the gunman for missing. The post, which she swiftly deleted after igniting a firestorm of criticism, showcased her apparent inability to hide her disdain for Trump even in the face of a violent crime. Though she later claimed the post was meant as a joke and not to be taken seriously, the damage was already done.

Marsaw, who served as a field director for Democratic Representative Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, found herself out of a job faster than you can say “politically unsavvy.” Even as she crooned about being a diehard Democrat, her attempt at dark humor didn’t sit well with anyone who has at least a working knowledge of decency. It was indeed horrifying, and it drew the ire of not only the public but also key political figures.
There is no room in American democracy for political violence. I am grateful for law enforcement’s fast response to this incident.
I am glad the former President is safe, and my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved.

Mississippi’s Republican Party didn’t waste a second in demanding Thompson take immediate action to “FIRE his field director for condoning the attempted assassination.” Meanwhile, Bennie Thompson tried to distance himself from the debacle with a somber statement about there being no place for political violence in American democracy. He praised law enforcement’s response and expressed relief that the former President was safe—a stark contrast to his aide’s mortifying lapse in judgment.
Fox News confirmed on Sunday that Marsaw got the boot following her ill-conceived post. Thompson tersely stated that the staff member was no longer employed, seeking to pour water over the flames of controversy. It’s worth noting that this incident isn’t Thompson’s first brush with controversial stances on Trump’s safety. During Trump’s trial on charges of falsifying business records, Thompson had audaciously called for removing Trump’s Secret Service protection if he were sent to prison.
The left likes to present themselves as the bastions of morality and decency, but incidents like these lay bare the hypocrisy. If nothing else, this serves as a reminder that the coming 2024 election is not just about choosing leaders—it’s about reclaiming the soul of America from those willing to pander to extremism and flirt with political violence. Buckle up because we’re in for a wild ride.
