Bernie Sanders stunned the political theater this week by saying what hardworking Americans have known for years: a secure border matters and, by his own admission, Donald Trump did a better job than Joe Biden at delivering it. Sanders made the comments on Tim Dillon’s podcast while pushing his book, plainly telling listeners that “if you don’t have any borders, then you don’t have a nation” and that securing them “ain’t that hard to do.” The blunt confession from one of the loudest voices on the left is a damning indictment of the Democrats’ excuses and a vindication of conservative calls for law and order at the border.
Let’s not pretend this shift is accidental — it’s the predictable result of years of Democratic drift from common-sense enforcement to virtue-signaling open-border politics. Leaders like Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi once talked tough about deporting criminal aliens and the need for stronger border controls, positions that are now inconvenient footnotes for a party that has embraced sanctuary policies and amnesty-by-stealth. Democrats can’t have it both ways: voters remember the old rhetoric, and now even a self-described socialist is calling out their failures.
Worse, the breakdown goes beyond rhetoric into dangerous official malpractice: federal investigators have flagged states for improperly issuing commercial driver’s licenses to people who should not have been eligible, exposing Americans on our roads to unnecessary risk. The tragic crash that prompted an FMCSA probe revealed that Washington and California issued commercial licenses under suspicious circumstances, and Transportation officials are rightly demanding answers and accountability. This is the practical consequence of lax state policies and the cultural contempt for federal immigration rules that Democrats have presided over.
Bernie’s admission should be a wake-up call to every Democrat who thinks a softness on border security will win votes: it won’t. Voters across the country are paying the price in higher crime, fentanyl deaths, and strained public services, and the political cover that once allowed open-borders experiments is collapsing even on the left. Conservatives have been warning that national sovereignty matters and that laws must be enforced; Sanders’ statement is the latest proof that commonsense immigration policy has broad appeal, not just among our base.
Now is the time for tough action, not bureaucratic excuses. State DMVs that failed to follow federal rules should be audited, improperly issued licenses revoked, and officials who looked the other way held accountable — because public safety trumps political signaling every time. If Democrats won’t enforce the law, patriots and responsible lawmakers must step in to restore order, dignity, and safety to American communities.
This moment isn’t about partisan gloating; it’s about protecting families, stopping the flow of deadly drugs, and defending the rule of law. Hardworking Americans want secure borders, safe streets, and a federal government that does its job — and now even some on the left are finally admitting what we’ve been saying all along. It’s time to turn those admissions into action: secure the border, enforce the law, and put America’s citizens first.
