Biden Brushes Off Activist Backlash, Dominates Michigan Primary

President Joe Biden managed to clinch the Michigan Democratic primary, despite facing opposition from a group of Arab and Muslim American activists who were not thrilled about his stance on the Gaza conflict. These activists rallied for voters to choose the “uncommitted” option in the primary as a way to express their dissatisfaction with Biden’s support for Israel. However, their efforts fell short as Biden secured over 78% of the Democratic primary votes, leaving the “uncommitted” option far behind.

It’s no surprise that liberal lawmakers like Rep. Rashida Tlaib jumped on the bandwagon to support the “Listen To Michigan” campaign, which aimed to sway voters towards the “uncommitted” ballot option. The campaign manager Layla Elabed, Tlaib’s sister, spearheaded this movement, accusing Biden of funding war and genocide in Gaza. The fact that their desired 10,000 vote threshold was easily surpassed with over 20,000 votes shows that their message failed to resonate with the majority of Democratic voters.

Michigan, with its significant Arab and Muslim American population, became a battleground for this political drama. Despite the efforts of the “Listen To Michigan” campaign and the emergence of groups like Abandon Biden urging voters to steer clear of supporting the President, Biden still emerged victorious in the primary. It’s clear that these fringe movements did not have the impact they hoped for in shaping the outcome.

As the dust settles, it’s evident that President Biden’s detractors are making noise, but ultimately failing to disrupt his momentum. The projections of a potential Trump vs. Biden rematch in 2024 favor the former President, further showcasing the uphill battle that Biden may face in securing key battleground states like Michigan. It seems the conservative voices in Michigan are not loud enough to sway the tide in their favor, and Biden continues to hold his ground in the face of opposition.
