In a shocking move that reflects the continued erosion of traditional values in the United States, President Biden’s Thanksgiving proclamation for 2023 completely omits any reference to God or faith. This is the first time in American history that such an omission has occurred, marking a significant departure from the original spirit of Thanksgiving.

The first Thanksgiving, celebrated by devout Christian pilgrims in 1621, was a testament to their unwavering faith in the face of tremendous hardship. These individuals, who had fled religious persecution, attributed their survival and successful harvest to God’s providence. Throughout history, presidents have acknowledged and honored God in their Thanksgiving proclamations, recognizing the nation’s roots in Judeo-Christian values.
George Washington, the first president of the United States, called upon Americans to offer prayers and supplications to the “great Lord and Ruler of Nations.” Abraham Lincoln closed all government offices on Thanksgiving Day in 1861 and urged citizens to give thanks and praise to the “beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.” Even former President Donald Trump emphasized the importance of thanking God for the abundant blessings in our lives.
President Biden’s omission of God from his Thanksgiving proclamation is deeply concerning. Gratitude without a recipient is meaningless, like a fake Christmas gift under a department store tree. By failing to acknowledge the ultimate source of our blessings, regardless of creed, we risk losing our moral compass and drifting aimlessly without an anchor to hold us firm.
Sadly, Thanksgiving has been drifting towards secularism in recent years, and Biden’s proclamation seems to cement this shift. If we neglect to recognize the historical roots and values that have shaped this nation, we risk losing the very essence of what Thanksgiving represents. It is a troubling sign of the times and a stark reminder of the importance of preserving our nation’s heritage and moral foundation.
