The Biden-Harris administration appears to be floundering more than a beached whale when it comes to the response to Hurricane Helene, and another tempest, Tropical Storm Milton, is set to unleash its fury on Florida as a Category 5 storm. Both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have decided to swap out storm management for storm politicking, using the situation to take jabs at Donald Trump and even attempt to stir discord among his Republican allies. Not surprisingly, they’ve honed in on Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina, whose state, particularly Asheville, has become an unwitting victim of this calamity.
As Hurricane Helene blew through, Kamala’s campaign team thought it was the perfect moment to twist Tillis’s words in a bid to gain some political traction. In the process, they overlooked the glaring reality: the victims of Helene need real help, not a political theater filled with finger-pointing and blame-shifting. The senator made it abundantly clear that he wasn’t just talking about Trump but was aiming his commentary directly at Harris and her ilk. After all, how exactly is one “working around the clock” when they can barely get their earbuds plugged in during staged photo-ops?

To make matters worse, the optics of Harris supposedly working diligently while taking notes on a blank piece of paper haven’t been lost on anyone. It’s almost as if her preparation for the job included getting a crash course in how to conduct a photo-op instead of a crash course in governance. With the GOP scrambling with a natural disaster on its hands, it’s ironic that the currently reigning party saw fit to play such juvenile political games in the face of chaos.
Criticism continues to mount against Harris and the Biden administration for the glaring absence of helicopters that could have been crucial in the rescue efforts. Instead of mobilizing Air Force assets for those in dire need, the administration seems preoccupied with directing funds toward foreign nations like Lebanon, suspending immediate aid to American citizens. Handing out a $750 check to families affected by Hurricane Helene is a far cry from the support victims truly require, especially when news of millions in foreign aid fills the headlines.
Meanwhile, amidst the stormy chaos, Harris has chosen to focus on something of paramount importance: her media appearances. Instead of addressing the hurricane crisis, she’s chosen to chat it up on the podcast “Call Her Daddy,” which seems to imply that her re-election bid is of much greater concern than the plight of hurricane victims. Even though her fellow Democrats are nervously glancing at their watches, fearing that she’s fallen off the campaign trail, it’s clear she’s far more comfortable dodging the storm than she is confronting it.
To top it all off, FEMA’s handling of the hurricane crisis has not been what anyone could call a glowing success. Fresh from a scathing critique over its funding and general preparedness, the agency appears to be more interested in protecting its image than actually responding to the disasters at hand. As various crises unfold, FEMA should prioritize the American people rather than indulge in the administration’s obsession with “equity” and virtue signaling towards illegal immigrants. It appears that political priorities have trumped the priorities of disaster relief, and Americans are left holding the bag—or rather, watching helplessly as their government plays politics rather than addressing their needs during crisis situations.
