In a recent report by NBC News, it has been revealed that the Biden administration is mulling over the idea of sending longer-range missiles to Ukraine. This move could potentially allow the Ukrainian military to strike deep into areas currently occupied by Russia. The consideration comes after the U.S. discreetly transferred a few older medium-range Army Tactical Missile Systems to Ukraine following requests from Kyiv. The potential new missiles being discussed have a range of about 180 miles, which could enable strikes on Crimea. Yet, House Speaker Mike Johnson has been reluctant to bring the bill to the floor for a vote, fearing it might face opposition from some Republican lawmakers. As the U.S. grapples with a limited stock of Army Tactical Missile Systems, the White House is cautious about supplying Ukraine without first securing funding to replenish its own arsenal.
It’s disappointing to see House Speaker Mike Johnson hesitating to push forward the crucial funding bill that would aid not just Ukraine but also strengthen America’s own national security. The request for ATACMS dates back to the early days of Russia’s invasion, showcasing Ukraine’s determination to defend itself against aggression. By providing Ukraine with the means to strike effectively against Russian forces, the U.S. can bolster its ally’s defense capabilities in the face of aggression.
