Biden Lags Behind Trump in April Donations, Despite Massive Cash Reserves

President Joe Biden and the Democratic National Committee announced on Monday that they brought in more than $51 million in April. This amount, however, falls short of the $76 million that Donald Trump and the Republican Party reported receiving during the same month.

Biden’s reelection campaign revealed that it had a cash reserve of $192 million at the end of April, which they claim is the highest amount ever for a Democratic candidate. However, this cash reserve is approximately the same as it was at the end of the first quarter of the year, indicating that the campaign is spending money as quickly as they are raising it.

Compared to March, April’s fundraising totals were significantly lower, with the president’s campaign and the DNC announcing over $90 million in donations the previous month.

While Biden has consistently outraised his predecessor, Trump’s April fundraising was bolstered by a record-setting $50.5 million raised at a single event with donors at a Florida billionaire’s home. In contrast, Biden’s campaign reported raising $26 million at a similar event in New York with former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.

Despite these numbers, Biden’s campaign plans to hold a major fundraiser in Los Angeles next month, featuring Hollywood stars George Clooney and Julia Roberts.

The Trump campaign reported raising over $65.6 million in March and ended the month with $93.1 million in cash-on-hand. Biden’s campaign, with its larger war chest, has been able to invest in advertising campaigns and mobilizing supporters across battleground states, surpassing Trump’s efforts on the ground.

Biden’s campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, stated that April’s fundraising is providing the resources needed to establish offices, hire organizers, and communicate across battleground states to mobilize the coalition of voters crucial in the upcoming election.

Despite Biden’s strong fundraising numbers, Trump’s personal finances have been under strain due to legal fees from ongoing criminal cases. The Biden campaign highlighted that April saw the highest number of recurring donors to date, with over $5.5 million contributed by such donors during the month alone.

Furthermore, the campaign noted that 225,000 donors have committed to giving every month, which is more than 1.5 times the amount at this point in the 2020 cycle. Since announcing his reelection bid in April 2023, 96% of all Biden’s donations have been less than $200, and 1.8 million donors have made nearly 4.9 million contributions.
