Joe Biden’s recent announcement of a pardon for his son Hunter is news that scarcely surprises anyone who’s kept an ear to the ground over the past few years. The mainstream media, in its typical fashion, may be caught off guard by this display of nepotism, but it’s far from unexpected for those familiar with the Biden family saga. After all, it takes a particularly low bar of moral integrity to feign surprise at anything related to the current president’s actions, especially those benefiting his own blood.
In September, Hunter Biden finally fessed up to charges of unpaid taxes and tax evasion. Not exactly the “good son” vibe one might hope for, but not a significant departure from the questionable behavior tracked throughout his life. Following this legal turmoil, the younger Biden faced the prospect of up to 17 years behind bars, which would be quite a comeuppance for anyone else in a similar situation. Yet, under the Biden umbrella, accountability appears to hang by a thread.

For well over a year, the White House buzzed with denials from press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, as she emphatically dismissed any notion of a forthcoming pardon. She assured the public that President Biden would remain unyielding against such actions. Apparently, her assurance was less of a firm stance and more an exercise in creative fiction, as the president recently decided to pull the ol’ “just kidding” maneuver on his earlier promises.
The revelation came after a lengthy, public plea from Hunter, which must have made the entire thing feel like a family reunion that no one wanted. In a characteristic display of either ignorance or delusion, Biden claimed he was merely fulfilling his promise to allow the Justice Department to operate without interference, despite clear evidence of political bias at play. His statement about keeping his word, amid a backdrop of contradictory claims and blatant deception, is more a punchline than a serious assertion.
The broad nature of the pardon effectively acts as a protective shield against a litany of alleged misdeeds, further emphasizing the pervasive sense of privilege that clings to the Biden family. The combination of Hunter’s dubious history and the president’s willingness to overlook it paints a rather grim picture for standards of justice in America. Hunter remains emblematic of an elite class where accountability is a foreign concept, leading one to question how long it might be before he stumbles into more trouble. In the eyes of many, it’s not a matter of if, but when.
