In a move that could only add to the infamous legacy of his administration, President Joe Biden has taken the rather audacious step of reducing the population of Guantanamo Bay. Just as the clock ticks down on his term, Biden’s latest “gift” to the world is the release of 11 notorious Yemeni nationals back to their homeland—a move that many are deeming nothing short of reckless. With this transfer, the terrorist population at Gitmo has been nearly chopped in half, leaving just 15 remaining prisoners at a facility designed to hold 250.
The Defense Department made this announcement in a rather ‘low-key’ fashion, opting for a news release that didn’t quite scream, “We’ve returned terrorists to the Middle East!” Hardly surprising from an administration that seems to thrive in the shadows of silence to implement its most questionable policies. These individuals weren’t picked up for jaywalking; they are former members of al-Qaida, scooped up after the brutal 2001 terrorist attacks on American soil. Among the released men are two who reportedly acted as bodyguards for none other than the late Osama bin Laden, a detail that might leave a few Americans scratching their heads over the administration’s logic.
This decision was supposedly delayed a few months back by Congressional pushback, but apparently, Biden has decided to go rogue in his final days. Critics are already hauling in their responses, with GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene leading the charge. In a fiery post on X, Greene remarked on the absurdity of sending these individuals back to a region where they could undoubtedly pick up right where they left off—scheming up plans that would endanger American lives. After all, when handling terrorists, a little common sense goes a long way.

Opposition to Biden’s moves is rampant. The conservative social media account LibsofTikTok succinctly summed it up with a blunt observation: Biden seems intent on inflicting maximum damage during his exit stage left. It’s hard to disagree when the facts on the ground reveal a Middle East that’s quickly spiraling into chaos, yet here is the Biden administration smiling as it slams open the gates of Gitmo for radicalized individuals who could very easily slip back into the web of extremism.
Even humor has its place in this grim narrative. Conservative radio host Jimmy Failla took to Twitter, quipping about the release of detainees with a poignant twist that contrasted their exit with the timeout of a certain daytime talk show. At least with some light-hearted jabs, there might be a small silver lining amidst the chaos—if a few terrorists can’t have their way, can we at least revel in the idea that Biden’s favorability ratings aren’t the only things taking a hit right now?
