Biden Scrambles as Iran Threatens Retaliation After Hamas Leader’s Death

The Biden White House is supposedly in crisis mode, trying to prevent Iran from launching an attack on Israel. It seems that the administration has finally grasped the gravity of the situation after a suspected Israeli operation took out Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week. While Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken are scrambling to find a diplomatic solution, one can’t help but wonder if their efforts are as effective as trying to plug a dam with a wet noodle.

With tensions simmering, Biden’s team is engaging in what they call “frantic diplomacy.” This is rich considering that the last time the administration showcased this level of urgency, it was probably to get more ice cream at a press event. Meanwhile, Israeli officials remain tight-lipped about their involvement, but it’s clear that Iran is gearing up for vengeance. Their foreign ministry has taken a hard stance, asserting a “legal right” to retaliate. The bravado of the Iranian leadership may leave some chuckling, as they often seem to possess a larger mouth than an actual military capability to back it up.

When it comes to the Biden administration’s definition of “diplomacy,” it seems to translate to urging Israel to show restraint while ignoring Hamas’s aggression. It’s almost comical: Blinken calls for calm, not realizing that Israel is the only player in this geopolitical chess match that even remotely listens. One can only imagine the absurdity of asking the faithless leaders of Hamas to maintain peace. After all, when Israel strikes back, it is as if they’re preparing to defend themselves against an unprovoked dog who has made a habit of biting the hand that feeds it—except this dog is carrying WMDs.

The reality is that Israel is no stranger to the game of self-defense, and they possess a well-armed arsenal, thanks in no small part to their relationship with the United States. Should Iran decide to escalate the situation, it would be playing with fire—in this case, a nuclear fire. With a fleet of German-made Dolphin-class submarines at their disposal and a modernized military, Israel is not a playground bully but a force to be reckoned with. If Iran provokes a fight, it’s likely they would quickly find themselves on the receiving end of a well-placed counterstrike.

Amid these rising hostilities, Biden did reach out to King Abdullah II of Jordan, hoping to ease the situation, along with discussions with officials in Qatar and Egypt. But the effectiveness of these calls is questionable at best. The crux of the matter is that Iran fuels the fires of conflict and defies American influence, particularly the ineffectual policies that mark the current administration’s foreign affairs strategy. The truth is that the so-called diplomacy is just a placeholder until January rolls around. The Biden administration seems content to put off these pressing issues until they can say, quite literally, that it’s someone else’s problem. Meanwhile, Iran is left unchecked, and the Middle East remains as tumultuous as ever.
