Joe Biden is preparing to make his exit from the Democratic National Convention, but it seems he’s already packed his bags and hit the road—quite literally. Some sources indicate the soon-to-be-former president is feeling “stunned and pissed” about being unceremoniously pushed out of the race, opting to trade in his political duties for a six-day vacation in sunny California. This getaway conveniently coincides with Kamala Harris’s ascension to the throne as the Democratic Party’s new queen, as well as former President Barack Obama’s anticipated speech. Nothing says party unity quite like a disappearing act at a coronation.
As he takes the stage at this grand Democratic farewell, Biden is likely going to put on his best face for the cameras while secretly seething at what some insiders describe as a betrayal by his own party leadership. It appears that Kamala Harris, once viewed with skepticism by many, has turned into a rock star among the party faithful, leaving Biden’s supporters lamenting that this newfound fame is just one more slap in the face to their beloved leader.

Biden’s feelings of treachery don’t stop at the party. There’s mentioned tension with Nancy Pelosi, who once enjoyed a 50-year friendship with the president. It seems Pelosi’s efforts to politically maneuver Biden out of contention might just be the final nail in that relationship. Even his bond with Obama is being tested, as Biden is left to grapple with the fact that many of the party’s heavyweights orchestrated what can only be described as a political coup.
There’s little doubt that Biden’s vacation antics are par for the course. He has a penchant for getting away from the White House, having enjoyed an astounding 40% of his presidency away from the job. But skipping his party’s big moment raises eyebrows, as it eats away at the notion of loyalty that Biden has tried to cultivate. This isn’t the first time he’s been sidelined, as the echoes of 2016 continually haunt him, when Obama all but anointed Hillary Clinton and sent Biden packing.
With Biden grudgingly endorsing Kamala, it becomes apparent that this isn’t merely a gesture of support but an astute political calculation as well—perhaps a strategy concocted to ensure his own legacy remains intact. While he may preach unity and a strong front against Trump tonight, it will likely feel more like a performance than heartfelt sentiment. Whether he’s truly able to pass the torch without getting burned in the process remains to be seen, especially given that his loyalists may not take this betrayal lying down. There’s a chance that Biden’s prediction of being the only Democrat capable of taking down Trump could prove correct—if, of course, Harris has to face the music in a general election. In politics, revenge is best served cold, and one can only speculate what winds might shift in the wake of Biden’s exit.
