Joe Biden and Kamala Harris provided a fitting display of priorities this week as they marked the third anniversary of one of the most embarrassing episodes in modern American history—our withdrawal from Afghanistan. Instead of addressing the fallout from a debacle that left countless allies behind and led to a resurgence of the Taliban, Biden was caught sunbathing at his lavish Rehoboth Beach residence. It’s almost as if he believes the sun’s rays can magically erase the mistakes made during his administration.
Meanwhile, Harris was sequestered in Washington, presumably devising plans that would do little to acknowledge the chaos that unfolded during the evacuation. While the Vice President lounged away in her bubble of advisors, the reality that faces veterans, families of those lost, and the many Afghans who relied on America for their safety couldn’t be more disconnected from their leisure activities. One has to wonder if they think ignoring their failures will make them go away.

It’s remarkable that as the consequences of their decisions linger, both leaders chose to engage in activities that seemed more in tune with a vacation vibe rather than taking accountability. Perhaps they think sunning themselves or seeking refuge in a plush office is an adequate response to the sacrifices made by so many service members. It’s certainly not the leadership Americans expect, nor is it what the nation needs.
Contrast this with the way past administrations have handled crises. During trying times, leaders often step up to the plate, acknowledge the issues, and outline plans for moving forward. But under the Biden administration, it appears that basking in the sun and compartmentalizing reality remains the modus operandi. As Afghanistan continues to crumble under Taliban rule and as the humanitarian crisis unfolds, the duo’s antics are a stark reminder of their detachment from America’s core values and interests.

In a world where serious issues demand attention, one has to laugh at the absurdity of avoiding reality. Maybe one day, Biden will find that a little more time in Washington, instead of the glossy beaches, could go a long way toward mending the rift created by their haphazard policies. Until then, the American public is left shaking their heads at their leisurely escapades, all while the consequences of their leadership continue to unfold.
