Biden, Trump Secure More Delegates in Kentucky, Oregon Primaries

In the latest primaries, President Joe Biden and his Republican rival, Donald Trump, each gained more support from voters in Kentucky and Oregon. This means they earned more delegates for their parties’ national conventions. These wins also show how much the Democratic and Republican bases stand by their leaders as the presidential nominating season is almost over.

Even after securing their nominations and defeating their opponents, both Biden and Trump are still facing some pushback from people within their own parties. Some Biden voters in Kentucky showed disapproval of his handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict by casting protest votes. On the other hand, some voters in the GOP primary in Kentucky chose long-defeated candidate Nikki Haley.

Looking ahead, there are still eight more presidential nominating contests left. Democrats will vote in Idaho, the District of Columbia, Guam, and the Virgin Islands, while both parties will hold primaries in Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, and South Dakota.

Besides the presidential primaries, voters in Kentucky, Oregon, Georgia, and Idaho also chose nominees for the U.S. House and other local positions.

In Georgia’s Democratic primary, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who is leading the prosecution of Trump in a 2020 election interference case, won against challenger Christian Wise Smith. Also, the judge in the same case, Scott McAfee, was re-elected.

In Portland, Oregon, the district attorney, who took office during the social justice movement of 2020, is facing a challenge from a candidate promising to be strict on crime.

With everything going on, the primaries are showing how the American people are using their votes to express their opinions about the current leaders and the issues that matter most to them.
