Hurricane recovery is no small task, and it takes a whole government effort. The military isn’t alone in this monumental endeavor. Agencies such as the Departments of Energy, Transportation, Health and Human Services, and Housing and Urban Development are joining forces. Their goal? To ensure that affected homeowners can find essential help, like mortgage relief, and streamline access to necessary services. FEMA is stepping up as well, planning to open disaster recovery centers where residents can gather crucial information and resources they desperately need.
With power outages affecting around three million people, the situation looks tough. However, power line workers from across the country, even from Canada, have united to restore electricity to homes and businesses in Florida. Additionally, the Federal Aviation Administration has green-lighted the use of large drones by Florida Power and Light to assess storm damage swiftly. This allows ground crews to leap into action and restore power more quickly, proving that technology can go a long way in recovery efforts.
The Coast Guard and the Army Corps of Engineers are also on the scene, diligently working to reopen the Port of Tampa for the influx of much-needed fuel, food, and water. This collaborative effort aims to get the basics flowing back into communities so that recovery can move at lightning speed – or as close to it as possible when Mother Nature throws a tantrum. However, amidst the recovery, officials are issuing stern warnings to those who might attempt to exploit the situation. The Vice President, alongside other leaders, has made it clear that price gouging and scams targeting vulnerable residents will not be tolerated. They’re prepared to hold the bad actors accountable. After all, the focus should be on helping those in need, not taking advantage of their despair. It seems that while some may seek to enrich themselves during a disaster, many others are standing firm in their commitment to support their fellow Americans.

While FEMA currently has what it needs, the Small Business Administration is approaching its limits.
