In a move that is sure to ruffle some conservative feathers, flags will be flown at half-staff on Saturday to honor former first lady Rosalynn Carter. The conservative community, while respectful of the former first lady’s passing, may find themselves rolling their eyes at this nod from President Joe Biden.

Carter, who lived to the impressive age of 96, passed away at her home in Plains, Georgia. Her funeral will be a three-day affair, taking place in Atlanta and Sumter County, Georgia, with Plains being her hometown. While many may offer their condolences, some conservatives might question the importance of such a grand gesture for someone from the opposing party.
President Biden, in true liberal fashion, lauded Carter’s legacy, praising her as a champion of equal rights and opportunities for women and girls. He also commended her advocacy for mental health and wellness for all, as well as her support for caregivers. However, to some conservatives, these accolades may come off as nothing more than liberal pandering and virtue signaling.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed that the Bidens will pay their respects to Carter, but the conservative crowd may wonder if this is just another opportunity for the president to grandstand and garner favor with his liberal base.
While Biden also praised Carter’s 77-year marriage to former President Jimmy Carter, some conservatives may see this as another attempt to score political points. The decision to lower flags at military posts, naval stations, and U.S. embassies may also leave some conservatives questioning the use of such a symbolic gesture for a former first lady who they may see as politically divisive.
The decision to lower flags for Rosalynn Carter’s passing may be a respectful move for some, but for many conservatives, it may be seen as just another example of liberal leadership overshadowing more critical issues facing the nation.
