Biden’s Offshore Drilling Ban Faces Trump Challenge On Day One In Office

President Joe Biden’s recent executive order has stirred quite the pot in conservative circles, as it officially prohibits drilling in over 625 million acres of U.S. coastal and offshore waters. It’s almost impressive how a single stroke of a pen can send shockwaves through the energy sector and raise eyebrows in every corner of the nation, particularly among those who believe that the average American should have access to affordable energy.

In a whirlwind response, President-elect Donald Trump declared he would flip this order on its head come his first day in office. The man is nothing if not bold; an attitude that won him a dedicated following. He claimed that the offshore drilling ban “will not stand.” Of course, the Democrats seem to have an aversion to energy independence, and it appears they are determined to take America down a green path paved with high gas prices and questionable energy sources.

While Trump’s enthusiasm is commendable, he faces a potential roadblock thanks to the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, passed back in 1953. This antique legislation allows presidents to designate areas as off-limits to drilling but, curiously enough, does not grant them the simple right to reverse those decisions. It’s as if Congress was determined to give politicians the power to make decisions they can’t easily undo—a move that makes one wonder how long it will take before our lawmakers realize that America should always be able to change course when it comes to energy policy.

Additionally, a judge in 2019 ruled that a similar order from the Obama administration couldn’t simply be tossed aside, which further complicates Trump’s plans. During a related press conference, the former president articulated his desire to not only revoke Biden’s latest executive order but also to impede the expansion of windmills on federal land. One has to appreciate the humor in the notion that while we restrict drilling for energy, we still lumber forward with an abundance of windmills— monuments to the disconnected policy decisions coming from the left.

In a statement that must have made his supporters cringe, Biden defended his latest draconian measures by crying out against the supposed “risks” of offshore drilling. He claimed the decision reflects sentiments from coastal communities and beachgoers, but really, whose interests are being truly represented here? It looks more like a flimsy excuse to push a green agenda than a genuine concern for the American public. In the face of rising energy prices, rising inflation, and an ever-volatile global energy market, Biden’s “clean energy economy” rhetoric might just sound like a luxury most Americans can’t afford.

Trump’s spokesperson Karoline Leavitt didn’t hold back when addressing Biden’s decision, calling it disgraceful and a politically motivated attack on the American spirit. Trump himself roared back, promising to restore energy independence—a goal that should have unanimous bipartisan support unless one is too busy aligning with climate alarmism. It’s clear that a battle royale over America’s energy future is brewing, and for many conservative Americans, it’s a fight that is desperately needed.
