Biden’s Transgender Mandate Crushed: Faith-Based Healthcare Victorious

The Biden administration is encountering yet another legal setback in its attempts to impose its radical policies on religious healthcare providers. Recently, the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against the administration's transgender mandate, and since the administration failed to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court within the given deadline, the ruling will remain in effect. The case, Sisters of Mercy v. Becerra, was brought forward by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, and it safeguards religious doctors and hospitals from being compelled to perform gender-altering procedures that contradict their religious beliefs and medical judgment.

It is deeply troubling that the Biden administration is singling out religious organizations, including Catholic doctors, who have chosen not to carry out gender reassignment surgeries on children who may not fully comprehend the lifelong implications of assuming a transgender identity. The mandate, which aimed to redefine sex based on gender identity, would have applied to all patients seeking such procedures. The Catholic plaintiffs rightly argued that the mandate violated their religious freedom and conscientious objections, rights that are protected under federal law.

Under the Biden administration, healthcare providers are placed in a challenging position where they must either violate their religious convictions or risk losing their jobs. This flagrantly infringes upon freedom of conscience and could have dire consequences for the millions of Americans who rely on faith-based healthcare providers, especially vulnerable groups such as the elderly, the impoverished, and the underserved.

Fortunately, the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty has once again emerged triumphant, ensuring that religious healthcare providers can adhere to their principles and not be coerced by the federal government into performing harmful and irreversible procedures that go against their conscience and medical expertise. "This victory is a win for patients, conscience, and common sense," remarked Luke Goodrich, the vice president and senior counsel at Becket. It is a cause for celebration.

It is disheartening, though not unexpected, that Xavier Becerra, Secretary of Health & Human Services under President Biden, has been involved in litigation against Catholic groups despite professing to be Catholic himself. This is a clear indication of the Biden administration's disregard for religious freedom and the protection of conscience. Nonetheless, this recent triumph demonstrates that with perseverance and a steadfast commitment to safeguarding our fundamental rights, we can still prevail against a hostile government determined to impose its radical agenda on all Americans, irrespective of their beliefs.
