James Comer, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, has asked the National Archives to provide him with unredacted versions of communications between the office of Joe Biden and Hunter Biden, the former vice president's son. This comes as his panel continues to investigate the alleged influence peddling by the Biden family.
According to Comer, the documents will show that the Bidens collaborated and abused their power, and he claims that the President did not separate his family's business dealings from his official government work. He also claims that Hunter Biden's associates had access to the Vice President's office.
Hundreds of emails between Hunter Biden's various businesses and the office of his father were released to the public through a Freedom of Information lawsuit. The documents revealed that his associates were able to access the White House using the Biden family name.
According to Comer, the emails show that the private business dealings of Hunter Biden were not separate from the official operations of the White House.
He was able to cite examples from the emails, such as an email sent by Eric Schwerin, who was a long-time Biden associate. In the email, Schwerin discussed the media outreach that Hunter Biden was planning on conducting regarding his role with Burisma. Kate Bedingfield, a spokesperson for the Vice President, then stated that the office had "signed off on this." The timing of the email is significant, as it came just a day after Hunter Biden allegedly called the White House to discuss the issue.
Hunter Biden's former business partner, Devon Archer, gave a testimony about how the Biden brand helped protect Burisma. According to Archer, the people who were associated with the company were intimidated into backing out of their plans. Comer believes that the allegations against the Biden family warrant a follow-up investigation, and he plans on issuing a subpoena to seek their testimony.
The attempt by Comer to obtain secret documents related to the Bidens' foreign business dealings is significant, as it could reveal details about the former vice president's family's involvement in these matters.
