President Trump is reportedly gearing up for a much-needed immigration crackdown in the city. Meanwhile, Boston’s mayor is making sure everyone knows he’s ready to stand his ground against it. It’s almost like a Hollywood flick where nobody asked for a sequel. The drama unfolds as tales of crime and chaos outside a once merry Holiday Inn, which got a not-so-jolly makeover into a tax-funded migrant shelter, are brought to light.
John Featherstone, a former director, recently blew the whistle on alarming situations within these shelters. The experience, as he describes, was pure chaos. Apparently, the word ‘vetting’ just seemed to lose its meaning as crimes ranging from domestic violence to more grotesque offensives made these shelters a horror house. One shocking incident made national news when a migrant allegedly impregnated his own daughter. It only took eight long months and a whole lot of spotlight to finally see an arrest. The governor, it seems, lives in a universe where closing shelters equals peace on earth, presumably not ending up anywhere near the math or reality most folks understand. Incident reports ballooned into the thousands, but it seems the leaders figured ignoring the data would make the problem disappear. It’s only fitting that the shelter operation felt more like a secret lair than a sanctuary, with outside access rivaling that of an exclusive concert backstage. Some congress members apparently opted to tackle safer topics, like renaming local highways, instead of diving into the fray.
As frustrating as the lack of action from elected officials might be, one must admire the audacity with which they claim everything is just dandy. Featherstone summoned sincerity at a supposedly neutral event, an army-navy game, no less. He even tried opening a dialogue with the governor, only to receive vague instructions to call her office—calls that went unanswered as if they somehow knew it was about more than menu changes for the next state dinner. The Governor and others eventually praised the noble idea of hosting migrants, but it seems they mistook wishful thinking for solutions. The takeaway? Ignorance, whether willful or dangerously naive, could very well let history repeat itself with a vigor reminiscent of Boston’s infamous blizzards.
