The weekend’s misadventures kicked off with “Face the Nation” host Margaret Brennan, who managed to bumble her way into a discussion about Nazis and free speech, leaving viewers baffled. Brennan’s idea that the Nazis were somehow liberated citizens enjoying their First Amendment rights might just be the most bizarre take since someone claimed pineapple belongs on pizza. The situation escalated further as CBS made headlines for running a segment on “60 Minutes,” where they attempted to celebrate historical fascists and their commitment to free speech. Apparently, the network’s plan was to critique the role of free expression in Hitler’s Germany by then pondering the “proper limits” of free speech—presumably enforced by ramshackle police armed to the teeth. The irony was thick enough to cut with a butter knife, causing viewers to double back and check if they had accidentally tuned into a low-budget comedy show.
As for the CBS talent roster, their talents clearly don’t extend to basic reasoning skills. Just when things couldn’t get murkier, CBS aired an interview with Kristina Drye, a rather melodramatic figure lamenting her lost job security. She encountered the harsh reality of working in bureaucratic quagmires, where stability is a whimsical concept. Drye’s sob story might have had more weight if it weren’t for the fact that many Americans are grappling with the same issues while cutting their own income and expenses. Perhaps the underlying issue stems from a broader misconception about journalistic integrity at CBS News. Some media critics assert that the network is becoming the prime venue for anti-American sentiment, rivaling even the staunchly progressive MSNBC and CNN. This isn’t new territory. CBS has been cozying up to liberal agendas since the days of Walter Cronkite and continues to serve up a daily dose of disinformation. It’s almost as if McMahon and her team enjoy a good pratfall, oblivious to the fact that they’re making fools of themselves and further discrediting their own profession in the process.
