Hollywood doesn’t shy away from melodrama, especially when confronted with the choice of the American people in a democratic election. Following Donald Trump’s victory on November 5, some celebrities seem to have lost touch with reality, and their subsequent tirades are as perplexing as they are entertaining. Alec Baldwin and Sharon Stone, for instance, took their disapproval of the election results overseas, flinging insults at the very voters who helped propel Trump into office, all while soaking up the European sun at the Torino Film Festival in Italy.

Sharon Stone, feeling particularly grandstanding, claimed that America was submerging into a state of “ignorant, arrogant adolescence,” all the while waxing poetic about how Italy has “seen fascism.” This sounds more like a dramatic screenplay than a reasoned political observation. The reality is that the American voters have actually confronted the specter of fascism, having fought against it in World War II. To equate Trump supporters with fascists is not only absurd but exhibits a stunning lapse in historical awareness. It’s amusing that she lamented about the lack of passports among voters, bemoaning the supposed ignorance of the American population. It raises the question: Does having a passport somehow grant wisdom on the national issues that matter most?
Then there’s Alec Baldwin, who appeared to be reading from his own script of superiority. His critique of the American populace centered on their supposed ignorance of pressing issues, such as climate change and Ukraine. One must wonder how the film industry suddenly became the oracle of knowledge on these topics, especially considering Baldwin’s track record of playing characters with questionable judgment. If the most pressing issues of our time revolve around abstract theories and foreign conflicts thousands of miles away, then perhaps Baldwin is the one who needs a reality check. After all, most Americans are more concerned with the daily grind of making ends meet than the whims of Hollywood elites.
Faced with these attacks from the left, conservative voices like Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana emerged to remind the public that these celebrity opinions need to be taken with a grain of salt, or perhaps tossed into the kale smoothie of Hollywood nonsense. Kennedy’s colorful Thanksgiving message encapsulated the sentiment of many Americans who feel underestimated by the coastal elite. They are capable of recognizing that their roots and beliefs may not align with the values paraded by those with substantial bank accounts and extravagant lifestyles.
The condescending overreach of Hollywood has a tendency to backfire spectacularly. As evidenced by the latest election, Americans are indeed tired of being treated as though they are less informed, less virtuous, and even less deserving of respect than those in the spotlight. The reality is, this election was a resounding reminder that ordinary citizens are fed up with the notion that they don’t matter. So here’s to those who stand by their values, even if it means being labeled “deplorable” by the elites. With each passing day, it becomes clearer that the political landscape is shifting, as more Americans embrace their right to be authentically themselves—unfiltered and unabashedly proud to be part of the great tapestry of this nation.
