In today’s world, it’s often been said that the U.S. economy is like that trusty old battery bunny, you know the one—it just keeps going and going. Despite all the doom and gloom predictions that have become the status quo for some political commentators, the American economy continues to defy expectations, just as it did this June. The latest figures reveal that 137,000 jobs were added, far exceeding the whispered predictions on Wall Street of around 100,000. Even unemployment is holding strong at a low 4.1%. It’s difficult to ignore these robust numbers, unless, of course, one chooses to stick their head in the sand.
These numbers are a clear testament to the effectiveness of policies aimed at supporting the American workforce. As the job market continues to perform admirably, native-born workers are witnessing gains, supporting the President’s mission to prioritize American jobs. It’s a far cry from the supposed economic apocalypse some predicted. With real wages seeing an increase, Americans are taking home more money after inflation. It’s almost as if the administration’s promises of putting more cash in Americans’ pockets are coming to fruition. Who would’ve thought?
The reality is that this is a consumer-driven economy, and the strength of consumer spending is helping drive this impressive job growth. As wages rise by over 3.7% and real wages continue their upward trend, Americans are experiencing a little more financial relief. Your average Joe—not just the billionaires everyone loves to vilify—is reaping the benefits of a stronger economy. Of course, leveling this playing field doesn’t make for catchy headlines, which is likely why some media outlets seem to pay it little mind.
There are those, however, who remain steadfast in their predictions of catastrophic outcomes. For certain political players, the sky is always falling, whether it be the economy, healthcare, or some anti-billionaire rhetoric. One can almost imagine them clutching their pearls at the thought of a working-class man being thrilled about his untaxed overtime. The horror of a black man in New York City praising changes that allow him to keep more of his hard-earned money is a narrative that’s likely hard to swallow for some.
While the cries of looming disaster get quieter in the face of undeniable success, it’s critical to acknowledge these accomplishments. The economic landscape in the United States is improving, a truth that can be somewhat inconvenient for those who rely solely on alarmism and negativity. If the story about the worker pleased with his untaxed overtime tips tells us anything, it’s that hard work is recognized and rewarded in this current climate, and that’s a reason to celebrate. It’s hard not to laugh at the irony—when you take a step back, even CNN can’t help but admit these good numbers.
