In recent news, comedian Rickey Smiley expressed concern that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) could begin deporting black Americans. This notion has understandably caused some alarm, yet it is crucial to understand the facts surrounding citizenship and the authority of ICE. The fear of deportation for citizens born in America is unfounded. The Constitution clearly protects those born or naturalized in this country, making them citizens with rights that cannot be arbitrarily stripped away.
Smiley’s comments seem to stem from a broader anxiety about an administration intent on enforcing immigration laws vigorously. However, the reality remains that ICE primarily targets individuals residing in the country without legal status. This includes those who may have overstayed visas or entered the country without proper documentation. For citizens, the path to deportation is essentially non-existent, barring extreme circumstances involving the loss of citizenship through severe acts such as treason.
It’s important for Americans, irrespective of race or political affiliation, to distinguish between rhetoric and reality. The ability to separate facts from fear-based narratives is vital for maintaining a sense of security and understanding of one’s rights. Those being deported are typically individuals who have not secured legal residency or citizenship status.
