Two National Guard soldiers were ambushed and critically wounded just blocks from the White House in a brazen daylight attack that should alarm every American who values order and safety. This wasn’t random street violence — it was a targeted assault on men and women in uniform safeguarding the capital, and it exposed a dangerous gap in our domestic defenses.
Authorities say the suspect is a 29-year-old Afghan national who arrived in the United States under the Biden-era Operation Allies Welcome program and has ties to resettlement efforts dating back to 2021. That fact alone raises obvious questions about the vetting process used to admit large numbers of foreign nationals during an administration that treated border control and immigration as secondary priorities.
President Trump addressed the nation quickly and forcefully, calling the attack what it appears to be — a deliberate act of terror — and he ordered additional National Guard forces to the city to ensure public safety. That decisive response is exactly what Americans expect from a commander-in-chief: protect the people and reinforce the rule of law, not spin and excuses.
Conservative Americans have warned for years that open-door resettlement without rigorous, transparent vetting invites danger, and this incident vindicates those warnings in the worst possible way. We should demand a full accounting of who was allowed in, who vetted them, and why red flags were missed or ignored under policies that prioritized politics over security.
The deployment of more than 2,000 National Guard troops to Washington earlier this year was a response to a real crime problem, and those troops were doing the hard work of keeping citizens safe when they were attacked. Critics who complain about using federal forces for public safety need to explain how leaving our capital less protected would have made anything better for ordinary Americans.
Now is not the time for partisan hand-wringing — it is the time for facts, accountability, and action. Lawmakers must reopen investigations into resettlement policies, strengthen vetting, secure our borders, and give law enforcement the tools they need to prevent future attacks on our servicemen and servicewomen.
We stand with the brave National Guardsmen who were shot, and we pray for their recovery while demanding justice and reforms that protect every community from foreign actors who exploit weak policies.
