SmarTrip cards in the nation’s capital have just taken a decidedly red turn, with limited edition Trump cards now available at select Metro stations. It seems the folks at WMATA have finally realized that celebrating the American spirit means recognizing democratic choices, even if some would rather forget the last five years. For the lucky riders, these Trump-themed cards can be snagged at popular spots such as Glenmont, Ashburn, L’Enfant Plaza, Shady Grove, and Vienna, along with the major airports. This is a rare opportunity to ride the Metro with style—and perhaps a little bit of pride.
However, it wasn’t always this way. In a glaring contrast, Metro failed to offer any SmarTrip cards to commemorate the inauguration of President Joe Biden in 2021. That’s right, the cards for Biden were apparently as scarce as compliments from his fellow Democrats. Instead, the service has happily rolled out themed cards for previous presidents like Trump, Obama, and even Bill Clinton, who was once the darling of the left, despite all his baggage—pun most definitely intended.
In what can only be seen as a well-timed celebration, Trump’s swearing-in ceremony is right around the corner. The excitement doesn’t end there; country music superstar Carrie Underwood has been lined up to grace the event with her vocal talents. She’ll belt out tunes between the swearing-in of Vice President-elect J.D. Vance by Justice Brett Kavanaugh and Trump’s own ceremony, presided over by Chief Justice John Roberts. One can only imagine the revelry that is set to unfold!
Of course, the excitement is somewhat tempered by a heads-up from Metro: several stations will be closed on Inauguration Day, including notable stops such as McPherson Square and the Smithsonian. It appears that the folks running the Metro are taking fewer risks this time, prioritizing safety and practicality over pandemonium, unlike some past occasions that had no shortage of chaos.
