DEI Backlash Grows as Texas Takes a Stand Against Woke Universities

Nothing says “DEI is dying” quite like the whining from academics who seem to think they’re entitled to an endless buffet of taxpayer-funded social justice initiatives. A recent example comes from a gender studies professor at Iowa State who expressed her dismay over cuts to DEI programs at the university. Her compelling argument? Students love these programs, so obviously, they should stay. Unfortunately, she conveniently sidesteps the elephant in the room: it’s not that students genuinely seek enlightenment; they’ve been indoctrinated into the Social Justice™ cult through years of public school grooming. They think being an “ally” gives them a shiny badge of honor and, let’s face it, these courses are a cakewalk compared to the rigors of actual scientific education.

One has to wonder why sociology classes often resemble a gathering of the bewildered. Take a trip down memory lane to Valdosta State University, where the cognitive dissonance was palpable, and students appeared to have all the critical thinking skills of a damp sponge. The internet remembers, and it’s not pretty. The real kicker comes from the so-called “DEI Disruptors,” like Roland Martin—a man who parades around in flashy costumes as if to distract from the sensational lack of substance in his arguments. He’s been crying foul over Walmart’s smart move to pare back DEI initiatives, all while lining his pockets on the backs of corporations gripped by fear of lawsuits and needy ESG scores.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Texas Governor Greg Abbott is gearing up for battle against Texas A&M University. The school has been found hosting conferences that express a shocking disregard for the law by explicitly banning white attendees—a move that clearly violates both state law and constitutional principles. Abbott has put university President Mark Welsh III on notice, vowing to oust him if the situation isn’t rectified immediately. The governor’s remarks made it abundantly clear that the DEI industry doesn’t get a free pass in Texas, especially after the state’s outright ban on these initiatives came into play with the signing of SB 17 in 2023.

This controversy erupted after conservative watchdog Christopher Rufo disclosed an internal email detailing the university’s plans to send participants to a conference exclusively for people of color, with requirements that made it crystal clear they were not interested in diversity of thought—only skin color. A&M is now stuck between a rock and a hard place, caught in a web of internal pressures that could easily lead to chaos reminiscent of past DEI scandals, like the infamous Evergreen College kerfuffle.

As conservative policies thrive in Republican-controlled states, the DEI grim reaper appears to be sharpening its scythe. Expect fireworks as publicly funded universities face continued scrutiny and potential confrontations while attempting to defend their DEI agendas. In a world where common sense seems to be on life support, it’s a delight to witness states actively pushing back against the absurd excesses of DEI, proving that the tide may finally be turning against this ideological farce.
