In a shining example of political gymnastics, Representative Bennie Thompson from Mississippi recently declared his willingness to accept a preemptive pardon from President Biden. Thompson, who once presided over the now-infamous January 6 Committee, took to CNN to signal that he wouldn’t mind a little presidential mercy. It’s quite the admission when a congressman openly fantasizes about pardons instead of focusing on the laws he’s supposed to uphold.
During his chat with CNN’s Jim Acosta, Thompson had quite the opportunity to showcase his concern about Donald Trump potentially sending him to the slammer. Rather than dismissing the idea as absurd, he went on to wax poetic about Congress’s incredible security protocols. After all, nothing says “I’m innocent” quite like sounding the alarm bells about how Congress members are untouchable.
When pressed about the White House’s supposed discussions regarding preemptive pardons for those who may face Trump’s wrath when he inevitably returns to the Oval Office, Thompson made his intentions crystal clear. He believes that if Biden were to bestow a pardon upon him, he wouldn’t be turning it down. Apparently, a little presidential goodwill from the party heading towards another electoral debacle is just what Thompson needs to sleep soundly at night.
Why not just confess?
The evil Jan 6th committee led by this guy. destroyed evidence, ignored exculpatory evidence, and destroyed lives to make temporary political points.Dem Rep. Thompson: I Would Accept Preemptive Pardon if Biden Offers https://t.co/VLLqMAKtpf via…

It’s noteworthy that Thompson lavished praise on the Republican witnesses who testified during his committee’s investigation. In a puzzling twist of logic, he insisted they were all stand-up citizens who never told a fib. This is, of course, a claim that has been met with eye-rolls and disbelief by anyone left of center. Thompson also highlighted how the committee had been reviewed, rather than, say, actually providing relevant evidence. A daring strategy, but one that seems to be working for him—at least in his mind.
In the end, what Thompson’s moment in the spotlight reveals is not just his eagerness for a pardon, but a larger trend among Democrats—reinventing narratives to fit their needs. Instead of focusing on accountability or consequences for their actions, the playbook seems to involve begging for forgiveness and hoping the public doesn’t notice. With representatives like Thompson, it’s no wonder that conservatism in America is still in such high demand.
