In the world of politics, the Democrats seem to have mastered the art of wielding revenge like an Olympic sport. Every time they find themselves in control, it’s as if they have a score to settle. And boy, do they keep score well! Particularly during and after a Republican administration, many have noticed that Democrats seem to thrive on not letting bygones be bygones. This tactic shone brightly at the end of Trump’s first term. Lists were made, names were taken, and an entire buffet of retribution was served to those who dared to align with the Trump administration. It appears Democrats have turned political accountability into an excuse for lawfare, where their first order of business is to target former Trump associates with laser-focused precision.
Recently, the former Obama adviser Susan Rice chimed in with her thoughts on the matter, offering not-so-cryptic warnings about an “accountability agenda” that would make Ebenezer Scrooge proud. Rice suggested that companies, law firms, and anyone who fraternized with the previous administration better hold onto their documents tightly, for subpoenas may soon rain down like confetti at a party. She ominously hinted that forgiveness isn’t on the agenda, as if that weren’t already crystal clear. Instead of offering a straightforward definition of wrongdoing, she leaves it to the imagination—an imagination seemingly fueled by vendetta.
In what can only be described as classic Washington theater, Susan Rice’s tone may have been less about justice and more akin to shaking a big stick. Some call this accountability, but to any seasoned political observer, it’s more suggestive of retribution. In their world, merely associating with someone like Trump apparently makes one guilty by association. It’s almost like high school all over again, but with higher stakes and more drama. Laura Trump, who experienced this not-so-glamorous political pageant firsthand, draws a parallel between these tactics and an authoritarian playbook, complete with threats and intimidation against any who dare work with Trump’s administration.
Now more than ever, some Americans are scratching their heads, wondering why Democrats focus on these witch hunts instead of pressing issues like the economy or national security—topics that might, just maybe, resonate more with the general populace. But dreams of defeating one’s rivals through intimidation and endless investigations seem to compound the real political issues. From the perspective of the Republican camp, the current Democratic approach seems less about problem-solving and more about problem-creating. It’s no wonder more individuals are waving goodbye to a party that’s seemingly obsessed with the politics of personal destruction, instead of policies that matter.
In the end, Susan Rice has unintentionally provided a cautionary tale of what the political landscape might resemble if Republicans find themselves out of power. Whether it be through accountability disguised as retribution or the unsettling practice of guilt by association, Americans might find little comfort in this vision. The pendulum of politics has always swung back and forth, but when it starts taking swings at individuals, not just policies, one can’t help but wonder if a longer-lasting imbalance is on the Democratic horizon.
