Victor Martinez-Hernandez, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador with known gang ties, was found guilty of kidnapping, raping, and brutally murdering Morin on a popular hiking trail—a crime so heinous and so well-documented that the jury needed less than an hour to reach its verdict. The evidence was overwhelming: Martinez-Hernandez had entered the U.S. illegally multiple times, was wanted for another murder in El Salvador, and left a trail of violence across the country. Now, Morin’s children are left to grow up without their mother, and her community is left asking why this never should have happened in the first place.
While Maryland families were still reeling from the news of the verdict, Senator Chris Van Hollen chose that very moment to make headlines—not by standing with the Morin family or demanding stronger border security, but by flying to El Salvador to advocate for the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, another illegal immigrant detained in a Salvadoran prison. Van Hollen’s priorities couldn’t be clearer: rather than focusing on the safety and justice for American citizens, he spent taxpayer resources championing the cause of a non-citizen with alleged gang associations. For many, this is not just tone-deaf; it’s a slap in the face to the very people he was elected to represent.
The Morin family, particularly Rachel’s mother Patty, has voiced her heartbreak and frustration over Van Hollen’s actions. She questioned why her daughter’s brutal death was barely acknowledged by her senator, while so much political capital was being spent on someone who is not even a U.S. citizen. This disconnect between elected officials and the people they serve is exactly why so many Americans have lost faith in the political class. When a mother is murdered by someone who never should have been in the country, and the response from leadership is to advocate for more leniency and loopholes, it’s no wonder public outrage is growing.

The Rachel Morin case is a wake-up call. Polling shows that immigration has become a top priority for Americans, with a majority supporting strong enforcement and deportation of those who commit violent crimes. Yet, Democrats like Van Hollen remain stubbornly committed to policies that put American lives at risk. It’s time for leaders to remember whom they serve and to put the safety and security of their citizens first. The Morin family—and countless others—deserve nothing less.
