In yet another episode of “The Leak Show,” it appears that someone with high-level security clearance felt like it was time to play “Who Wants to Leak a Secret?” The Pentagon is teaming up with the FBI in a high-stakes whodunit to uncover the culprit behind a sensitive leak that’s taken the nation by storm and created yet another circus in Washington, D.C. Many folks in the past favored the hands-off approach toward investigating leaks, but those reins have been snipped thanks to the current administration. Of course, this wouldn’t be an issue if we didn’t live in an age where people seem to think betraying their country is akin to a TikTok challenge.
The Department of Justice, led by the steely determination of Mr. Todd Blanche, is gearing up to pull out all the stops to unmask the perpetrator of this treasonous act. Security breaches like these aren’t just a slap on the wrist; they’re a spit in the face of national security. The DOJ seems chomping at the bit to make an example out of the leaker, aiming to deter future deep state enthusiasts from trying their hand at espionage for dummies. Sadly, there’s no Pulitzer Prize for treason, but maybe there’s an award for the most creative way to become the most wanted person in the news?
The leak in question not only put the nation’s military efforts into the media spotlight for all the wrong reasons but also dragged our top officials into defending the indefensible. An unfounded report forced the Secretary of Defense, the President, and even Secretary Rubio to spend their day fielding questions instead of doing their day job—protecting American citizens. It’s a sad state of affairs when, for the sake of a moment in the headlines, these leaks put national security at risk, making it an antagonist’s dream situation. Surely, somewhere out there, Iran is taking grateful notes.
This pesky leak, however, has also triggered the media to preemptively complain about the Trump administration waging war on the First Amendment by merely suggesting that, horror of horrors, journalists might have to explain themselves. The leaks were clearly not motivated by the First Amendment or any noble quest for transparency. Instead, they resemble a calculated assault to undermine President Trump and, quite frankly, to create a political spectacle. The Justice Department seems fully prepared to call the reporters to account, ready to dig deeper than ever before.
The twist in this caper comes with rumors swirling around that a member of Congress might have been the source of this information. If a Congress member is indeed the leaker, the tricky question is whether they would be immune due to their position. Unfortunately for any congressional wannabe leakers out there, Mr. Todd Blanche isn’t aware of any immunity clause that protects irresponsible leaking of top-secret frag grenade intel to the press. If the mystery mole is a member of Congress, well, it seems it’s time for a refresher course on the Constitution—particularly the part about not blowing your country’s secrets for a fleeting headline.
