DOJ Revives Criminal Probe into Black Lives Matter’s $90 Million Mystery

The Department of Justice has renewed a criminal inquiry into allegations that the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation mishandled more than $90 million raised in the aftermath of the 2020 protests. Federal subpoenas have been issued and at least one search warrant executed, though no criminal charges have yet been filed; the foundation maintains it is not the target of a federal criminal probe.

Reporting indicates the inquiry was initially examined during the prior administration but has been given fresh attention under the Trump-era leadership at the Justice Department, with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles playing a leading role. The involvement of that office and subpoenas to foundation leaders shows this is no casual review — this is a serious examination of where donor money went.

Skeptics have pointed to the BLM foundation’s own 2022 disclosures, including the purchase of a roughly $6 million Los Angeles-area property, and long-running questions about opaque accounting and commingling of funds with fiscal sponsors. Lawsuits and reporting on missing or redirected dollars have piled up, fueling legitimate public concern about stewardship of those donations.

Good. No organization should be above scrutiny simply because it wrapped itself in a popular cause or enjoyed favorable coverage from sympathetic journalists. For too long the left treated activist nonprofits as untouchable, while ordinary Americans who give to charity get audited and held accountable. If laws were broken, prosecutors should pursue charges swiftly; if not, let full transparency put the matter to rest and restore public confidence.

This isn’t theoretical: there have already been convictions of actors tied to so-called social-justice groups who used donations for personal indulgence, showing why independent audits and criminal probes matter for donors and communities. Americans who opened their wallets after George Floyd’s death deserve to know their generosity wasn’t looted and spent on luxury living.

Conservatives should cheer a justice system that treats all citizens equally and pauses the reflexive double standard from the political class. The real scandal would be a cover-up or the media’s attempt to gaslight citizens into believing accountability is an attack on protest. Demand the records, back the investigators, and insist on criminal consequences where wrongdoing is proven.

President Trump and his allies say they are simply enforcing the rule of law and protecting honest donors from fraud; that is exactly what voters want from their leaders. Let investigators follow the evidence, let no one be shielded by fame or ideology, and let this be a reminder that patriotism includes defending honest government and honest charity.
